Alathur (SC) is one of the most historic constituencies in Kerala. E.M.S. Namboodiripad - India first elected Communist Chief Minister - won from here in 1977. CPI(M) has won 10 out of 11 elections since then. The lone UDF win was in 1991 by just 338 votes.
