Email vs WhatsApp vs Telegram: Which Countries Use Each Platform the Most?

Quick Answer

• Highest email penetration: Nigeria
• Highest email volume: United States
• Highest WhatsApp penetration: Ghana
• Highest Telegram penetration: Russia
• India: WhatsApp is more widely used than email, while Telegram also has unusually strong penetration.
• USA, UK and Western Europe: Email remains especially important for professional and formal communication.
• Latin America, Africa and India: WhatsApp plays a major role in both personal and business communication.
• Russia and parts of the Middle East: Telegram is particularly important.

Which Countries Use Email the Most?

There are two main ways to measure email usage:

1. The percentage of internet users who regularly use email.
2. The total number of emails sent.

These two measures produce very different rankings.

Countries With the Highest Email Usage Rate

Based on monthly email usage among internet users aged 16 and above:

Nigeria therefore appears to have the highest email penetration among the surveyed markets.

Interestingly, several developing and emerging markets have higher email usage rates than countries traditionally associated with corporate email communication.

Email Usage in Selected Major Markets

India has a huge number of email users in absolute terms because of its population, but its email penetration rate is lower than in many Western, African and Latin American markets.

Which Country Sends the Most Emails?

When total email volume is considered instead of user penetration, the ranking changes.

These numbers should be treated as approximate because email traffic estimates vary according to methodology and reporting year.

The broader conclusion is clear: the United States remains one of the world’s biggest email markets in terms of actual message volume.

Which Countries Use WhatsApp the Most?

WhatsApp has become one of the world’s most important communication platforms.

It is particularly dominant in Africa, Latin America, India, the Middle East and parts of Europe.

Countries With the Highest WhatsApp Penetration

India records approximately 84.6% WhatsApp penetration among the surveyed internet population.

Countries Where WhatsApp Is Less Dominant

WhatsApp is not equally important everywhere. Some countries rely heavily on local or competing messaging platforms.

This is an important lesson for international marketers: WhatsApp is global, but it is not universal.

• China: WeChat is dominant.
• South Korea: KakaoTalk is dominant.
• Japan: LINE is highly important.
• Vietnam: Zalo has strong adoption.
• United States: SMS, iMessage and other messaging platforms remain important.

Which Countries Use Telegram the Most?

Telegram has a smaller global footprint than WhatsApp, but its penetration is extremely high in certain countries.

It is especially important in Russia, parts of Africa, the Middle East and several Asian markets.

Countries With the Highest Telegram Penetration

The global average is approximately 33.8%, making Telegram’s penetration in Russia and Nigeria particularly notable.

Email vs WhatsApp vs Telegram in India

India provides a particularly interesting case because all three platforms have large audiences.

WhatsApp clearly has the widest penetration of the three.

This reflects what businesses regularly see in India: people may provide an email address, but many expect fast communication through WhatsApp.

A quotation, appointment confirmation or sales follow-up sent via WhatsApp may receive a faster response than the same communication sent only through email.

That does not make email irrelevant.

Email Remains Important For

• Invoices
• Quotations
• Contracts
• Formal correspondence
• Account registrations
• Password resets
• Transaction confirmations
• B2B communication
• Documentation

WhatsApp Is Particularly Useful For

• Quick enquiries
• Sales follow-up
• Customer support
• Appointment reminders
• Lead qualification
• Location sharing
• Short updates
• Conversational commerce

Telegram Is Particularly Useful For

• Large groups
• Public channels
• Community building
• Information broadcasts
• Technology-focused audiences
• News distribution

Email vs Messaging Apps: Which Is Better for Business?

There is no universal answer.

The right communication channel depends on the country, audience and type of communication.

Email Is Better For

Email remains superior when communication needs to be formal, searchable, documented or structured.

• Contracts
• B2B sales
• Quotations
• Proposals
• Invoices
• Reports
• Official notices
• Account communication
• Detailed customer support

Email also remains extremely important for marketing automation and CRM systems.

WhatsApp Is Better For

WhatsApp is ideal when speed and conversational communication matter.

• Inbound sales enquiries
• Lead follow-ups
• Appointment confirmation
• Customer support
• Order updates
• Local business communication
• Service reminders

In high-WhatsApp markets, forcing customers to communicate only through email can create unnecessary friction.

Telegram Is Better For

Telegram works particularly well for large-scale community communication.

• Large public channels
• Large discussion groups
• File sharing
• Broadcast communication
• Bots
• Community management
• News distribution

For marketers, however, Telegram should usually be treated as a market-specific communication channel rather than a universal customer communication platform.

Best Communication Channels by Country

The table above is a practical interpretation of available usage data and should not be treated as a formal statistical ranking.

What This Means for Digital Marketing

One of the biggest mistakes in international digital marketing is assuming that the same communication funnel works everywhere.

It does not.

A lead-generation campaign in India may perform better when the landing page prominently offers:

Call + WhatsApp + Form

A B2B campaign targeting Germany, the UK or the United States may still require email as the primary follow-up channel.

In Brazil or Nigeria, WhatsApp can be an essential conversion channel rather than merely an optional contact method.

Telegram may be highly valuable in markets such as Russia or Saudi Arabia, but far less important in the US or parts of Western Europe.

The correct approach is to build communication strategy around local behaviour, not around one global template.

Sources and Methodology

The rankings in this article are primarily based on internationally comparable survey data from:

• GWI
• Digital 2026 Global Overview Report
• DataReportal
• We Are Social
• Meltwater
• Supplementary published Statista summaries

Most percentages represent internet users aged 16 and above who reported using the respective service during the previous month.

Different datasets may use different age groups, survey periods or methodologies. Small differences between reports should therefore be expected.

The figures should be understood as approximate comparative indicators rather than exact real-time user counts.
