Model check-post at Walayar

Minister for Finance Thomas Isaac has said that the Walayar check-post will be made the first integrated model check-post in the State within three years. He told presspersons here on Sunday that the functioning of the check-post would be improved by providing online scanning and a better communication network, posting officers of integrity and initiating checking by special squads from outside the district.

Mafia gangs and such elements would not be allowed to interfere in the functioning of the check-post, he said.

He said infrastructure and vehicles would be provided at the check-post. A scanner would be installed on an experimental basis soon. If found successful, scanners would be put up on all eight tracks.

He said the 12 border panchayats of the district would be involved in the running of satellite check-posts. The panchayats would form vigilance squads to prevent smuggling. Ten per cent of the additional income brought through vigilance work would be given to the panchayats. The Minister said that a special checking conducted at the check-post the other day revealed large-scale tax evasion. This was because a number of vehicles were allowed to pass without collecting tax.

He said the annual collection from the check-posts in the State was only Rs. 200 crore, but it could be increased manifold if tax was collected properly.
