Trees worth about 1000 crores felled.
News paper reports and field information show that rampant tree felling in private forests and estates are happening in Attappadi area for the past so many days. It is done by using the new act on Promotion of planting trees in non-forest land act 2005, which is the act of the amended Preservation of Trees act 1986.It is very sad to feel that in the name of promotion of tree planting acts Tree cutting is going on.Attappadi, the deforested evergreen land with high abundance of wildlife and ecosystems, was surviving with remaining forest areas,(which is under the custody of forest department as well as with the private parties) are in the process of desertification in the current scenario.
It is an ironical situation that the same area is in the process of restoration of natural ecosystems and promotion of planting trees under the AHADS project. Several marginal farmers were ready to spare their agricultural land to plant trees. But in the same area thousands of hectors of forestland in the custody of private parties are being cleared irrespective of wildlife, vegetation and various ecosystems. This will directly result in loss of precious wildlife wealth that are protected under wildlife protection act 1972, desertification of the remaining land and will cause serious natural disasters by means of adverse climatic conditions, water shortage, famine etc. Destruction of wildlife habitats is non-bailable offence under this act. The act envisages up to 7 years imprisonment and heavy penalty to the wildlife offenders.
