No change in dengue situation: Centre

The Centre on Monday said that there was no change in the dengue situation in the country while chikungunya was on the decline except in Kerala where cases were still pouring in large numbers from some districts.

"Dengue cases are still being reported from across the country with 382 new cases coming in during the past 24 hours, taking the total number of afflicted people to 5,418 and the toll to 98. We have to see the trend for at least 7-10 days before pronouncing any change. But the cases are not going up," P.L. Joshi, Director of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, told reporters here.

However, in the case of chikungunya, there has been a decline except in some districts of Kerala. The newly affected districts of the State are Palakkad, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. As many as 246 new chikungunya cases have also been reported from Gujarat in the past 24 hours.

The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has released Rs. 22 crore for 10 States and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for purchasing fogging machines and arranging awareness campaigns to deal with the outbreaks.
